North Vietnam Cycling Expedition — Cao Bang Loop

It’s not a trip to accumulate kilometers.
It’s a journey to understand where you are.

Northern Vietnam cannot be discovered in a hurry.
It reveals itself gradually, on secondary roads that wind through karst mountains, in villages where time follows a different rhythm, and in days that begin with mist and end with a shared local beer.

From the very first moment in Cao Bang, the feeling is clear: you are far from everything.
There is no traffic here, no rush… just roads that seem endless and landscapes that change with every curve.

We ride through the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, crossing small rural communities, hidden rivers and valleys where life remains untouched.
Each stage offers something different:
a long and silent climb,
a descent through rice fields,
or a section where the only sound is the wheel rolling on the asphalt.

And then come the places that define the journey:
the border with China at Ban Gioc,
the historic landscapes of Pac Bo,
or the arrival at Ba Be Lake, where everything slows down.

This is not a highlights trip.
It’s a journey of moments.

Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi

Arrival in Vietnam and first contact with the country’s rhythm. Transfer to the hotel and time to rest, prepare the bikes, and start adapting to the surroundings.
In the afternoon, a gentle ride around the area and a welcome dinner to get to know each other, share expectations, and officially begin the journey.

Day 2 — Hanoi → Cao Bang (Transfer)

We leave the chaos of Hanoi behind and gradually head into the mountainous north. The landscape changes, traffic fades away, and Vietnam begins to reveal its more rural and authentic side.
Arrival in Ha Giang, the expedition’s base and starting point toward some of the country’s most remote regions.

Day 3 — Cao Bang→ Ban Gioc (104 km | +1700 m)

A high mountain stage crossing the spectacular Ma Phuc Pass, through karst landscapes and villages where the Nung An ethnic group keeps its traditional crafts alive.

A route that combines culture and nature, passing through Angel Eye Mountain, the Nguom Ngao Cave, and small artisan villages.

An iconic finish at the border with China with a visit to the Truc Lam Pagoda and the impressive Ban Gioc Waterfall.

Day 4 — Bang Gioc → Pac Bo (107 km | +1900 m)

A stage that crosses the valleys of Ngoc Con and Phong Nam, a fairytale landscape on the border with China, with a stop at the spectacular Pi Pha Viewpoint.

A gentle transition through Tra Linh, riding along quiet roads and small local settings.

Arrival at Pac Bo, where we stay in a traditional Tay house, surrounded by nature and authenticity.

Day 5 — Pac Bo→ Cao Bang (57 km | +800 m)

The stage begins in Pac Bo, a key place in Vietnam’s recent history, where every corner connects with the legacy of Ho Chi Minh and the beginning of the revolution.

Leaving behind this history-rich setting, the route continues through remote rural areas and small communities, revealing the most authentic local way of life.

Arrival in Cao Bang, returning to a more active setting after a stage that blends history, culture, and landscape.

Day 6 — Cao Bang → Thanh Cong (63 km | +1600 m)

A rolling stage departing from Cao Bang and entering the Non Nuoc Geopark, surrounded by spectacular karst landscapes and quiet roads.

A full immersion into rural Vietnam, riding through small villages and authentic environments far from tourism.

A transition day that gradually brings us closer to the greener, wilder landscapes on the way to Ba Be Lake.

Day 7 —Thanh Cong→ Ba Be lake (53 km | +800 m)

The route from Thanh Cong leads into one of the most remote and wild regions of northern Vietnam.

The landscape becomes denser and more natural, with abundant vegetation, rolling terrain, and long, quiet roads.

The stage finishes at Ba Be Lake, a natural sanctuary surrounded by jungle-covered mountains, one of the most special endings of the journey.

Day 8 — Ba Be lake→ Hanoi (Transfer)

Return to Hanoi. Time to organize memories, share stories, and close the journey the same way it began: around a table, celebrating what we’ve lived and saying goodbye to Vietnam.
